Artwork Description
The artwork is a representation of country when the range of wildflowers bloom throughout the arid regions of Warramungu country.
Some wildflowers can be found year round, even in the dry season. A wildflower of particular importance and use is parakeelya, the entire plant, including its flowers, leaves, and roots, is consumed.
This plant is commonly prepared by steaming its leaves, roots, and stems before consumption. The succulent leaves are eaten raw for their high water content, providing essential hydration when water sources were scarce.
The painting's design shows Jalparr - flowers, as the arid landscape gives way to a range of colors and shades from the wildflowers in bloom, Wawirri - Kangaroo would graze and gnaw at the plant indicating the parakeelya flower could be gathered and prepared, sometimes the seeds would be collected and eaten however they ripen unevenly and requires a lot of work to gather a sufficient quantity of seeds.
